The Clubhouse Model
The Clubhouse model was established in New York in 1948 and has now become a community of over 360 Clubhouses. The Clubhouse aims to create an environment where individuals can acquire the confidence and skills necessary to lead vocationally productive and socially satisfying lives. The International Centre for Clubhouse Development (ICCD) serves and represents the worldwide Clubhouse movement.

  • A Clubhouse is founded on a genuine partnership between Members and Staff and seeks to maximise the potential of each Member.
  • Relationships within the Clubhouse are built around the principle of joint working and both Members and Staff contribute to Clubhouse meetings, indeed there are no Staff or Member only meetings within the Clubhouse.
  • The Clubhouse aims to provide a work-centred environment, which places the emphasis on the inherent strengths and skills of the Members.
  • The Clubhouse aims to develop a range of Transitional Employment Placements to enable Members who have been long term unemployed to gain work experience in open employment.
  • The Clubhouse aims to develop a programme with Members, which includes vocational guidance, access to further education, advocacy and social/cultural activities.
  • The Clubhouse aims to assist Members to obtain independent employment.

Flourish House
Flourish House was established in 1997 and is one of four in Scotland that make up the Scottish Coalition of Clubhouses. Glasgow Association for Mental Health (GAMH) was our auspice agency initially but Flourish House became an independent charity in 2001. As membership is lifelong we have over 1000 Members, with approximately 225 actively participating in the service at the moment (40 - 50 members per day). Staff and Members work in partnership in all areas of the Clubhouse and together they plan and carry out all the activities necessary to make Flourish House run smoothly.

The Four Rights of Membership:

      • A right to a place to come.
      • A right to meaningful relationships.
      • A right to meaningful work..
      • A right to a place to return.
