International Clubhouse Model Flourish House is part of an international community of similar projects called Clubhouses. For more about these, click the heading above.
Promoting Recovery Flourish House seeks to promote recovery from mental health problems through meaningful activity and social contact. Members have the opportunity to participate in the work ordered day and take part in education, training and employment; as well as our social events.
Flourish House works on a social, not a medical, model of mental health. This means that we work with people's strengths and abilities and seek to empower each other through partnership working.
Work Ordered Day Flourish House is divided into 3 work units that are designed to manage the everyday tasks associated with the operation of the Clubhouse. Members join Flourish House, select a unit (or units!) according to their interests and work side by side with staff, in a unique partnership that encourages members to contribute in a meaningful way.
While Flourish Houses work is not job-specific training it does give the opportunity to experience different kinds of work in a supportive environment. Everything is voluntary and you can do as much or as little as you like.
Catering and Maintenance Unit Members can get Involved in all aspects of catering from cleaning dishes to preparing the daily three course lunch. At lunch time members run the cafe with minimal support from staff this is served between 12.30 - 1.15. Members are welcome to get involved in all aspects of maintenance such as recycling, painting and cleaning.
Administration Unit Finance, reception, monthly newsletter, typing and loads of other things are done here - brush up on existing skills or try the computers for the first time! You can use your creative abilities to make greetings cards or write for the newsletter.
Education and Employment Unit Our unit supports people who are working, studying, volunteering or training. On average 90 members a year try out one of these options. The unit keeps track of everybody and offers individual support. We also offer tailored courses for Flourish House members that include return to study, literacies and intro to computing.
Employment Programmes
We can offer support with employment. For more information, follow this link.
Below is a quote from one of the staff at our longest running Transitional Employment Placement:
"As a small employer with nine staff we weren't sure if we would have enough work to give someone the chance to experience real, meaningful employment. At first we offered a placement for four hours per week. We soon discovered that having an extra member of staff to deal with the filing, sorting the mail, keeping the office and kitchen tidy helped the office run more smoothly allowing the rest of the staff team to do their work more efficiently and freeing them up to get on with generating the work that makes our business successful. We have increased the placement to eight hours per week and would now find it difficult to manage the office as effectively without the members of Flourish House."

"Flourish has helped me to get my confidence, which I had lost before. It has helped me to get back into a working environment and I've now been able to help others on their recovery."
"I think the House gives a sense of belonging and achievement and social acceptance."
"Flourish House promotes confidence and because it offers a normal environment it allows people to gradually get back on their feet. There is an acceptance here and it is lovely. Flourish House is a shelter from the storm"
"Recover confidence and skills is a phrase that seems very true for me. When I first came here I was very shy but not now!"
